Journey Without Worry: Preventing Traveller’s Diarrhoea

Posted in Health

Travelling to new destinations is an exciting adventure, but it's important to be prepared for the possibility of traveller's diarrhoea. This common condition can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, including loose stools, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Fortunately, there are a number of simple precautions you can take to reduce your risk of traveller's diarrhoea. Here are four essential tips:

Mind What You Eat and Drink

Bottled Water: Stick to bottled water, and ensure the seal is unbroken. Avoid ice in your drinks unless you're certain it's made from purified water.

Cooked and Hot: Go for thoroughly cooked and piping hot meals. Steaming hot dishes are less likely to harbour harmful bacteria.

Freshly Prepared: Choose dishes that are freshly prepared and served immediately. Be cautious of buffet-style food that may have been sitting out for a while..

Street Food Caution

Stall Selection: If you want to sample street food, choose stalls with a high customer turnover. This indicates that the food is likely fresher and safer to eat.

Foods to Avoid: Avoid raw or undercooked seafood, eggs, and meat to minimise the risk of contamination. Ensure vegetables are cooked thoroughly and avoid eating cut fruit unless you can’t peel it yourself.

Stay Hydrated and Be Prepared

Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot climates like the middle region of Myanmar, to stay well-hydrated. Consider packing oral rehydration salts to combat dehydration if diarrhoea strikes.

Practice Good Hand Hygiene

Frequent Handwashing: Wash your hands often with soap and clean water, especially before eating or after using the restroom. Carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer for situations without access to clean water.

Vaccinations and Medications

Diarrhoea is often related to bacterial infection, such as cholera and influenza. Prior to your trip, consult a healthcare provider about vaccinations to reduce this risk. Ensure you get vaccinated at least two weeks before for full effectiveness. In case of severe diarrhoea, visit a doctor for necessary medication including antibiotics.

By following these five crucial tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling ill and focus on making wonderful memories during your travels. Safe travels!
