Pregnancy Care Tips During for the Monsoon Season

Posted in Parenting, Pregnancy

The monsoon season brings with it an array of concerns for pregnant women, including increased risks of infections and slippery surfaces. Here are a few pregnancy care tips to help moms-to-be navigate this rainy season with confidence and safety.

Maintain Good Personal Hygiene

Heavy rainfall and flooding create a fertile ground for harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. To protect yourself and your baby, prioritise good personal hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals. Avoid touching your face, and ensure that your surroundings are clean and dry to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Avoid Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes thrive in the rainy season, and for pregnant women, mosquito bites can bring greater risks of illnesses like Zika virus, dengue fever, chikungunya, and malaria.  Protect yourself and your baby by clearing out stagnant water around your home that may become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Remember to use mosquito coils or nets, and wear long sleeves and pants while sleeping. When outside, apply roll-on mosquito repellents on your clothing for added protection.

Prevent Slips and Falls

The rainy season brings slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of falls, which can be particularly hazardous during pregnancy. Mitigate these risks by wearing appropriate footwear with good grip, avoiding rushing on wet surfaces, and using handrails when walking on stairs or in slippery areas. Whenever possible, stay indoors during heavy rainfall to reduce the risk of accidents.

Avoid Street Food and Raw Food

Cravings are a part of pregnancy but be cautious with street food during this season. Unclean street food can cause problems like food poisoning and indigestion. Since your immunity is sensitive during pregnancy, it's best to limit street food and opt for trusted food stalls instead. Avoid raw food too, as they can easily get contaminated. Choose nourishing options like vegetable soups or fresh fruit juices for essential nutrients for you and your baby.

Stay Active Indoors

Maintaining physical fitness during pregnancy is crucial for your well-being. Engage in gentle exercises suitable for pregnancy, such as prenatal yoga or simple stretching exercises, while indoors. Regular physical activity can help alleviate discomfort, improve circulation, boost immunity and promote overall well-being.

By following these pregnancy care tips, you can navigate the monsoon season with confidence, ensuring the well-being of both you and your baby. Take care, stay healthy and enjoy your pregnancy journey!
